New Dune trailer impresses

If you were thinking of watching Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune movie on a streaming service on the small screen, viewing this new Dune trailer may make you reconsider. Aptly titled Official main trailer by Warner Brothers, it’s significantly more impressive, emotional, and lavish than what has come before, providing a closer look at the battle scenes, characters, technology, and designs. The trailer looks fantastic. You’ll want to watch this movie in as much detail as you can (preferably in an IMAX cinema). If you’re a fan of Frank Herbert’s Dune series, you could not hope for anything more.

The years of waiting after David Lynch’s misguided Dune adaptation in 1984 may have paid off. Perhaps we’ll finally experience an adaptation true to the original source material – and a movie that doesn’t include an oiled Sting dancing around in his shorts or a floating Baron with incredibly bad acne.

This 2021 version of Dune reportedly only covers the first half of the first novel. Director Denis Villeneuve (Arrival and Blade Runner 2049) said he would not have agreed to make this adaptation with a single movie.

“The world is too complex. It’s a world that takes its power in its details It’s by far the most difficult thing I’ve done in my life.”

Dune Director Denis Villeneuve

Just remember, there are six novels in Frank Herbert’s original Dune series. If we were to receive two movies for every book, we could expect 12 movies in total (I can dream, can’t I?). If you haven’t read Herbert’s Dune series already, start now and you may finish before Dune’s international release on 22 October.

Frank Herbert’s original Dune novels

  1. Dune
  2. Dune: Messiah
  3. Children of Dune
  4. God Emperor of Dune
  5. Heretics of Dune
  6. Chapterhouse: Dune

Let’s just hope Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is as successful as this trailer suggests it will be. If so, we could be seeing a great deal more of the Dune universe in years to come.
