Explosive Matrix Resurrections trailer released

It’s been a long time between drinks, but the first trailer for a new Matrix movie titled The Matrix Resurrections has been released.

When will Matrix Resurrections arrive?

The Matrix Resurrections will premier this Christmas, 22 December 2021. The movie will also stream digitally on HBO Max in the US for a month beginning on the same date. This will be the first new Matrix franchise movie since the back to back follows ups in 2003 (The Matrix Reloaded was released 15 May 2003 followed by the The Matrix Revolutions just months later on 5 November 2003).

What cast members are back for Matrix Resurrections?

Best of all, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are back in the lead roles as Neo and Trinity. The movie is co-written and directed by Lana Wachowski (half of the former Wachowski brothers responsible for the original movies). David Mitchell (of Cloud Atlas fame) and Aleksander Hemon also take co-writing credits. Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus) and Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith) won’t be returning. Laurence Fishburne told New York magazine that he had “not been invited” to return as the resistance leader Morpheus: “Maybe that will make me write another play. I wish them well. I hope it’s great,” he said.

Matrix Resurrections trailers released so far

It’s clear from the first trailer that Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) do not know each other, or know what the Matrix really is. The rest of The Matrix Resurrections plot has been kept secret. While the trailer looks great, it doesn’t reveal much.

Why did Keanu Reeves sign up for Matrix Resurrections?

Reeves explained his decision to sign on to The Matrix Resurrection:

“Lana Wachowski wrote a beautiful script and a wonderful story that resonated with me. That’s the only reason to do it.”

What was the original Matrix movie about?

The 1999 movie The Matrix is set in a dystopian future where humanity is trapped inside a simulated reality. Intelligent machines have created this simulation (The Matrix) to distract humans while using their bodies as an energy source. When computer programmer Neo (Thomas Anderson) discovers the truth, he is drawn into, and eventually leads, a rebellion against the machines.

How did the first Matrix movie end?

The Matrix trilogy ended with peace between the humans and machines. Humans were given the option to leave the Matrix completely. However, both Neo and Trinity died. Trinity died in a hovercraft crash. Neo died after killing Agent Smith. This at least explains the “Resurrections” part of the movie’s title.
