The first trailer for Blade Runner 2049, the sequel to Ridley Scott’s iconic, android laced dystopian film Blade Runner, hits all the right notes. Harrison Ford as Deckard is now joined by Ryan Gosling, a new Blade Runner called Officer K.
Ryan walks through a barren, windswept, decaying city in the trailer, apparently walking into the same building featured in the first film and right into Deckard’s old apartment. The future Los Angeles appears to have decayed even further since we were last there. He plays a few notes on Deckard’s old, dust covered piano.
“I had your job once … I was good at it,” says Harrison, appearing with gun in hand to greet the new arrival.
“Things were simpler then,” Ryan replies, unfazed.
It’s 30 years since the events of the first film, and 34 years since the release of the first film in 1986 in the real world. Apparently, Officer K has discovered a long-buried secret that could bring chaos to an already fractured society.
The trailer is light on details, but this is to be expected as we won’t be able to watch Blade Runner 2049 until 6 October 2017.
Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, and Jared Leto are also in the cast, with Denis Villeneuve directing. Villeneuve recently directed the excellent science fiction film Arrival.
Should we expect a worthy follow-up or pale imitation of the original? The signs are good but it’s early days.
